    EMERGENCY ULTRASOUND DIVISION
SUNY DOWNSTATE/KINGS COUNTY HOSPITAL CENTER
DEPARTMENT OF EMERGENCY MEDICINE

DIVISION

Welcome to the Emergency Ultrasound Division at SUNY Downstate/Kings County Hospital Center. We are a dedicated group of faculty, fellows and residents committed to emergency ultrasound (EUS) education. There are three separate core ultrasound rotations throughout the residency, 2-4 weeks in duration. During these rotations, residents scan in the ED, review recent literature, participate in the QA process including image and video review, and meet regularly with the EUS faculty.

We are a busy trauma center with a significant volume, and as such there is ample opportunity to use ultrasound to assist you in the assessment and management of a wide variety of impressive pathology. By the end of your residency you will have far surpassed the recommended number of scans set forth by the ACGME and ACEP guidelines for EUS training.

At present we have 7 active machines at our two main hospitals. Images from studies are stored digitally and are routinely reviewed for QA purposes.

Throughout the year, the Division faculty give lectures dedicated to EUS during Wednesday Conference, which cover core competency and evolving topics in EUS. We are committed to EUS research and have several active projects at all times.

Currently, we are creating a comprehensive 1st through 4th year medical student curriculum in EUS at SUNY Downstate. Our goal is to expose medical students to the varied and expanding roles of clinical ultrasound, to familiarize students with the basic functioning of ultrasound systems, and to help this generation of students incorporate clinical ultrasound into their global approach to patient care and patient safety. Senior medical students from SUNY Downstate or outside institutions who would like to do an elective with our Division should click here.

We also offer a 1-year Emergency Ultrasound Fellowship at SUNY Downstate/Kings County Hospital Center. Click here for more information.
